Our Process

What you can expect when starting with Slam Dunk Occupational Therapy.

① Get in Touch with Us

It all starts with a simple enquiry by calling us or completing our online contact form.

We’ll answer any initial questions and help you decide if mobile, online, or in-clinic (coming soon) sessions are right for you.

② Complete Your Intake Forms

Before your first meeting, we’ll send you an intake form to complete. This helps us understand:

  • Your child’s background and needs

  • Relevant medical or developmental history

  • Any reports or assessments you want to share

  • Your goals and priorities for therapy

This information helps us tailor the best support for your family.

Our Session Format

At Slam Dunk Occupational Therapy, every session, including individual therapy sessions and Parent Planning Meetings, are booked as a 70-minute block.

  • 50 minutes of face-to-face time (in-person or online), where we work directly with you and/or your child.

  • 20 minutes dedicated to professional notes, session planning, and administration, ensuring we document your child’s progress carefully and plan effectively for their next session.

This structure ensures your child’s therapy is personalised, goal-focused, and seamlessly coordinated session to session.

③ Parent Planning Meeting

Your first official session with us is a Parent Planning Meeting.

Format: Usually online or by phone for convenience (in-person available if needed).
Duration: 50 minutes face-to-face discussion, plus 20 minutes for your therapist to create your personalised summary (Total session billing time: 70 minutes).
Who Attends: Just you (the parent or carer) so you can speak freely.

During this meeting, your therapist will:

  • Listen to your concerns and priorities
  • Learn about your child’s daily routines, challenges, and strengths
  • Support you in identifying and prioritising therapy goals
  • Recommend the most suitable service model (mobile, online, group, or parent coaching)

After your session, you’ll receive a personalised therapy summary outlining agreed goals, recommendations, and next steps.

④ Starting Occupational Therapy Sessions

Once your goals are set, therapy begins!

Your child’s Occupational Therapist will use the information from the planning meeting to create an individualised intervention plan tailored to their unique needs.

Sessions are:

  • Flexible: Delivered in your home, online, at school/daycare, or (soon) in our clinic.

  • Play-Based: Fun, engaging activities that help your child learn and grow.

  • Goal-Focused: Targeting the specific skills that matter most.

We plan sessions carefully and bring appropriate toys and resources, while also incorporating your child’s own toys and routines wherever possible to make therapy practical and meaningful.

Your therapist will:

  • Provide clear, achievable goals

  • Review and adapt these goals as needed

  • Share tools and strategies you can use at home or school

  • Keep you updated on progress every step of the way

⑤ Ongoing Parent Support

We know parents and carers are a child’s most important support.

  • Feedback is included during our 50-minute face-to-face sessions. For school-based sessions where parents aren’t present, we provide written session notes to keep you informed.

  • Parent coaching sessions to help you use strategies at home (Additional Cost)

  • Communication with teachers and carers (with your permission) to ensure consistent support (Additional Cost)

⑥ Optional Assessments

While formal assessments aren’t required to start therapy with us, we do offer them if needed for NDIS, school supports, or other purposes.

We’ll always talk you through what type of assessment is appropriate for your child’s needs.

Examples include:

  • NDIS Functional Capacity Assessments (FCAs)

  • School Readiness Assessments

  • Assistive Technology Assessments

  • Reports for school funding or support plans

How long does an assessment take?

It really depends on the complexity of your child’s needs:

  • A School Readiness Assessment might take around 1.5 hours.

  • A full Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) can involve up to 12 hours total, including interviews, observation, scoring, and report writing.

Your therapist will explain the recommended assessment process clearly,  including timeframes, steps involved, and what you’ll receive at the end.
